Aġenzija Sapport’s Deaf & Hard Of Hearing Unit Supported 44 People In 2025

Professionals from Aġenzija Sapport have taken part in training on sign language and Deaf culture as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen inclusive services and improve communication accessibility for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

The session was organised by the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Unit within Aġenzija Sapport and was led by Emma Ripard Xuereb. It was attended by social workers, occupational therapists, members of the Agency’s management team and other professionals.

Participants received an introduction to Maltese Sign Language, while also gaining a better understanding of the culture and experiences of the Deaf community, with support from the Agency’s sign language interpreters.

The training focused on practical communication skills, including basic Maltese Sign Language vocabulary and ways professionals can provide more accessible and inclusive support in their daily work.

Participants also discussed how greater awareness can help create environments where people who are Deaf or hard of hearing can communicate and participate more effectively.

The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Unit was established towards the end of 2024 and became operational in 2025. It provides support and guidance to people who are Deaf or hard of hearing and their families through awareness sessions, individual interventions and home visits tailored to individual needs.

During 2025, the Unit supported 44 people, while eight training sessions were delivered to professionals at Aġenzija Sapport. Further sessions are planned, including activities for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and their families, carried out in collaboration with the Agency’s interpreters.

During a visit to one of the training sessions, Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering Julia Farrugia said accessible communication is central to achieving genuine inclusion.

She said that investment in professional training and specialised services is helping create a more accessible system where people who are Deaf or hard of hearing can fully participate in society.

Aġenzija Sapport Chief Executive Officer Oliver Scicluna said initiatives such as this complement the Agency’s services by improving communication access, strengthening inclusion and supporting families and professionals working alongside people with disabilities.
