87.42% Total Voter Turnout For 2026 General Election

According to the Electoral Commission, the approximate total turnout for this year’s general election was 87.42%.
Out of a total of 356,832 registered voters, 311,949 reportedly went out to vote yesterday, Saturday 30th May.

The turnout figure includes all votes cast during the early voting sessions held throughout the week and represents a notable increase from the 85.6% turnout recorded in the 2022 general election.
That election had registered the lowest voter participation rate since Malta gained independence.
District 7 recorded the highest turnout nationwide, with 90% of voters participating, while District 12 registered the lowest turnout at 81%. Turnout increased across all districts, with the largest rise recorded in District 8.
This year’s result marks a 1.8 percentage point rise, reversing a long-term downward trend in voter turnout.
Although participation remains significantly below the levels commonly recorded between the 1960s and early 2000s, when turnout frequently exceeded 95%, it is the first time in more than two decades that voter turnout has increased from one general election to the next.
Approximately 15,500 eligible voters, representing 4.3% of the electorate, did not collect their voting document.
Earlier indications of strong participation emerged during the day, with the Electoral Commission reporting that 43% of eligible voters had already cast their ballot by 2pm.
With voting now concluded, ballot counting is set to begin at 9am on Sunday.
