85% OF WORKS COMPLETED ON NEW PUBLIC GARDEN IN BAĦAR IĊ-ĊAGĦAQ

Around 85% of works have been completed on the transformation of an abandoned site along Coast Road in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq into Ġnien it-Tbissim, a new public park covering approximately 5,500 square metres.
Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, together with members of the Local Council and the Project Green team, visited the site to review the progress of the project, which aims to create a greener recreational space for families and the community.
Minister Dalli said the former abandoned area, which was previously affected by illegal dumping, is being transformed into a modern garden designed especially for children and families. Once completed, the park will feature 500 trees, including 200 newly planted trees, combining environmental improvement with public amenities.
Works completed so far include the installation of natural hardstone paving and the completion of sanitary facilities, while playground equipment is currently being installed. The project has now entered its landscaping phase, with additional trees and plants being introduced.
Existing native trees are being preserved, while new native species are being added to strengthen biodiversity. Project Manager Dylan Abela Spiteri explained that once vegetation matures, the tree canopy is expected to cover around 57% of the site, providing approximately 3,135 square metres of natural shade.
The project, costing nearly €1 million, is being financed through EU funds under Measure 8.5 and forms part of the Community Greening Grant Scheme.
