85% Of Maltese Families Own Their Own Homes, NSO Says

A statement issued by the National Statistics Office (NSO) shows that in 2025, 85% of Maltese households owned their own homes. This marks a rise from 82% recorded the previous year and represents a record level of home ownership in Malta.
In total, 122,403 Maltese and Gozitan households were homeowners in 2025, with 91,757 of these households owning their property outright without any outstanding loan. The figures highlight a strong level of financial stability among a significant proportion of homeowners.
The highest rate of home ownership is recorded among households made up of two adults with one child, where the rate exceeds 93%. This suggests that family units of this type are most likely to own their residence.
The NSO results also indicate that Government schemes introduced in recent years to support home ownership have had a positive impact, contributing to the increase in the number of people becoming homeowners.
When compared with Europe, Malta continues to record significantly higher levels of home ownership. While 85% of Maltese and Gozitan households own their homes, the European average stands at 68%. Germany records one of the lowest rates at 47%, which is almost half the level seen locally.
Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul welcomed the figures, noting that nearly 92,000 people own their homes outright. He said the results reflect effective policies aimed at helping more young people and families achieve home ownership.
