Today marks 84 years since the George Cross was awarded to Malta by King George VI.

At the height of World War II, ‘amidst relentless bombing raids, Malta’s resilience and bravery captured the world’s admiration’, wrote AFM.

The cross was awarded on the 15th of April 1942, and is the highest British award for non-operational gallantry.

‘To honour her brave people, I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history.’
