84 years ago, the Mosta Rotunda narrowly avoided destruction after a German aerial bomb pierced the dome and fell into the church during Mass, but failed to explode.

The avoided catastrophe was hailed by many locals ever since as a miracle, with the iconic Mosta church attracting devoted and tourists alike due to its history and architecture.

The casing of an identical bomb is now displayed in the sacristy at the back of the church.

The Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of our Lady is a Roman Catholic parish church built between 1833 and 1860 to neoclassical designs of Giorgio Grognet de Vasse.
