A striking imbalance in global travel habits is at the centre of new EU proposals on tourism, as Members of the European Parliament highlight that 80% of travellers visit just 10% of destinations worldwide, placing intense pressure on a handful of popular hotspots.

In response, the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee has backed a series of measures aimed at creating a more sustainable and balanced tourism sector.

The proposals, guided by Maltese MEP Daniel Attard, were approved by a strong majority on Wednesday.

Attard emphasised that this concentration of tourism not only strains infrastructure and local resources but also limits opportunities for lesser-known regions.

The plan therefore encourages travellers to explore emerging destinations, including rural areas, mountainous regions and remote communities, with experiences centred around culture, gastronomy and outdoor activities.

Improving connectivity is another key pillar, with proposals to strengthen air, sea and land links to these under-visited areas.

Measures such as expanding cross-border night trains and introducing a seamless ticketing system aim to make alternative destinations more accessible.

Ultimately, the strategy seeks to spread tourism more evenly, reducing pressure on overcrowded areas while ensuring more communities across Europe can benefit from the industry.
