The number of licensed motor vehicles in Malta continued to increase during the second quarter of 2026, with the overall stock rising by 3,086 vehicles to reach 463,734 by the end of June, according to figures released by the National Statistics Office.

Passenger cars remained the most common vehicle type, accounting for 73.1% of all licensed vehicles.

Commercial and agricultural vehicles made up 14.3%, while motorcycles, E-bikes, PA-bikes, e-kick scooters, quadricycles and all-terrain vehicles represented 12.0%. Buses and minibuses accounted for less than 1% of the total.

The vehicle stock grew at a net average rate of 34 vehicles per day during the quarter.

A total of 7,237 motor vehicles were newly licensed between April and June, averaging 80 new licences each day. Passenger cars accounted for 4,206 of these, or 58.1%, followed by motorcycles, E-bikes and PA-bikes with 2,070, representing 28.6%. Most newly licensed vehicles, 4,415 or 61.0%, were new, while 2,822 or 39.0% were used imports.

During the same period, 6,398 vehicles were taken off the road due to restrictions. Nearly 40% were scrapped, while 38.8% were placed in garages.

Restrictions ended for 2,520 vehicles, with most returning after being garaged or resold.

Petrol remained the dominant fuel type, powering 268,836 vehicles or 58.0% of the total fleet. Diesel vehicles accounted for 155,294, representing 33.5%.

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles continued to grow, reaching 23,854, or 5.1% of all licensed vehicles.

Compared with the previous quarter, plug-in hybrid diesel-electric vehicles increased by 9.3%, while mild hybrid petrol-electric and plug-in hybrid petrol-electric vehicles rose by 6.0% and 5.8% respectively.
