On January 23rd 1957, Malta was hit by a massive storm which saw the Gozo Ferry ‘Banċinu’ being cut off from her moorings at Mġarr harbour.

The vessel was driven ashore during the night. Unfortunately, 63 year old Ġużeppi Xuereb, the watchman on the ship, died during the incident.
