Energy and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli has stated that 69 electric vehicle charging pillars formerly operated by the car sharing company GoTo have been transferred to the Climate Action Authority, correcting claims made in parliament that the number exceeded 400.

The clarification was given in a written reply to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Graham Bencini.

In her response, Dalli said the Climate Action Authority worked together with Transport Malta to take over the charging pillars previously managed by GoTo.

She explained that the transfer was carried out so that the pillars could undergo the necessary repairs and coordination before being brought back into use. According to the minister, the transfer was completed in January.

The charging pillars have remained unused since GoTo ceased operations in Malta in 2022, despite repeated government statements over the years indicating that the infrastructure would be repurposed for private electric vehicle users.

Many of the former GoTo locations still include reserved bays and visible charging equipment, though they have not been operational for public use.

Dalli said the Climate Action Authority will now begin the required preparatory work to enable the charging pillars to start operating.

No timeline was provided for when the chargers will become available to the public, and the minister did not indicate whether additional charging points are planned as part of this process.
