Six people have been killed and at least 16 injured after a mass shooting in the Polish city of Kraków on Saturday afternoon.

The shooting took place in Kraków’s popular Main Market Square, when a 25-year-old man allegedly opened fire on people from his car.

Police rushed to the square and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, knocking him to the ground and arresting him within minutes of arriving, though a few officers were injured in the fight.

Polish authorities searched the gunman’s house and discovered the dead bodies of his parents and sister. They also said that the attacker might have been driven by far-right ideologies, although investigations into his motive are ongoing.

Following the tragedy, Poland has declared two days of national mourning as tributes and messages of solidarity pour in online. Prime Minister Robert Abela was one of them, offering his condolences to the people of Poland.
