Nearly six in 10 catering operators in Malta reported stable or higher sales during the first half of 2026, according to new industry data covering more than 450 establishments.

The latest Q2 2026 “Insights on the Catering Industry” survey by the Association of Catering Establishments found that 59% of operators saw sales remain stable or increase compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, 51% said profitability was also stable or had improved.

The findings point towards a relatively resilient sector, despite continued pressure from rising costs, tighter profit margins and staffing challenges.

More than 4,000 catering establishments are currently licensed across Malta and Gozo, with the average establishment employing around 11 full-time workers and three part-time employees.

The survey also found that more than half of respondents have been in business for over 10 years, while 29% have operated for more than 20 years.

Over the past three years, 81% maintained the same number of outlets, while 14% expanded their operations and just 5% downsized.

Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the results showed a sector which remains “strong, dynamic and resilient” despite the challenges it faces.

He added that long-term success will also depend on operators continuing to adapt, innovate and invest in quality.

The results were presented during a dissemination session at the Workers’ Memorial Building in Valletta.
