More than half of Malta’s professional judges are women, according to recent Eurostat data, highlighting the strong female representation within the country’s judiciary.

The study found that 56% of professional judges in Malta were women, showing that females make up the majority of legal judges on the island. The figure places Malta among the European countries where women have a stronger presence within the judicial system.

Across the European Union, women are also the majority among professional judges in almost every member state. Slovenia recorded the highest share, with women making up 81.4% of its judges, followed by Latvia at 79.7% and Greece at 75.5%. Ireland was the only EU country where male judges outnumbered female judges.

The data was released to mark the Day of International Criminal Justice on 17 July, commemorating the adoption of the Rome Statute in 1998, which established the International Criminal Court (ICC).
