55 Year Old Sailor Dies In Maritime Accident Off The Wied Il-Għajn Coast

A Filipino seafarer, aged 55, has died following a maritime accident that took place approximately 15 nautical miles off the coast of Wied il-Għajn.

The incident happened yesterday during rough sea conditions, when the man fell into the water while carrying out work aboard a vessel.

According to initial findings, he lost his footing while attempting to secure a service boat to the ship, as strong waves hit the area.

The Armed Forces of Malta were alerted and requested to assist, with the Police subsequently informed of the situation.

In an attempt to save the man, a 43-year-old Filipino crew member jumped into the sea. With the help of two other sailors, they succeeded in retrieving him from the water.

Both men were brought ashore by the Armed Forces. Sadly, the 55-year-old was pronounced dead on land, while the second seafarer was taken to Mater Dei Hospital and later discharged without injuries.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened, and Police investigations remain ongoing.
