500 Speeding Fines During Night Checks In June and July

The Malta Police Force has revealed that over 500 speeding fines were issued during recent nighttime traffic enforcement operations across the island.
These checks, carried out between 8:00pm and 4:00am throughout June and July, targeted excessive speeding, with many vehicles caught travelling more than 15km/h over the legal speed limit in various zones.
Among the most serious violations were drivers clocked at 159km/h, 156km/h, and 148km/h in areas with a 70km/h speed limit.
In an 80km/h zone, one driver was caught driving at 124km/h. Meanwhile, in a 60km/h zone, vehicles were recorded speeding between 103km/h and 118km/h.
Alarming figures also came from 50km/h zones, where drivers were caught reaching speeds of up to 159km/h.
The Police said these operations are part of ongoing efforts to ensure road safety, particularly during nighttime hours when roads are emptier and the temptation to speed increases.
These figures come amid a worrying rise in road incidents, with six traffic-related fatalities recorded just last week, prompting renewed calls for responsibility and caution on Malta’s roads.
