5 Key Takeaways From Alex Borg’s Budget 2027 Speech
Local

Opposition Leader Alex Borg delivered his response to Budget 2027 on Monday, 2nd November, outlining his views on Malta’s economy, wages, foreign workers and the country’s future.

Under the message “Together, We Are Malta,” Borg criticised the Government’s direction while calling for greater unity between businesses, workers and families.

Here are five key statements from his speech.

1. Workers And Businesses Should Not Be Turned Against Each Other

Borg accused the Government of creating divisions between employers and employees over who should shoulder rising costs. He argued that businesses should be helped to succeed while ensuring workers also benefit through better salaries and working conditions.

2. Malta Cannot Keep Growing Its Economy By Increasing Its Population

The PN Leader argued that Malta must reduce its dependence on recruiting more foreign workers. Instead, he said the country should focus on improving productivity, developing skills and creating more value from existing jobs.

3. Economic Growth Means Nothing If People Aren’t Better Off

Borg stressed that Malta’s economic success should be reflected in people’s everyday lives. He argued that higher wages, affordable housing and better services are essential for families to genuinely feel the benefits of economic growth.

4. The €1,000 Bonus Alone Is Not Enough

While welcoming the Government’s €1,000 bonus, Borg argued that financial assistance alone cannot solve Malta’s long-term challenges. He said families also need better opportunities, reliable public services and lasting improvements in their quality of life.

5. Malta Needs Long-Term Planning, Not Short-Term Political Decisions

Borg called for greater cooperation on national priorities, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and climate resilience. He argued that important projects should continue regardless of which political party is in Government.

Concluding his speech, Borg called for national unity, insisting that political differences should not prevent people from working towards a better future.

“We don’t have to agree on everything to work for the good of the country we share,” he said.
