480 Kids & Over 1,100 Adults To Receive Free EpiPens, Minister Announces

People at risk of severe anaphylaxis will soon be provided with free EpiPens through a new government scheme set to cost roughly €352,000 each year.
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the plan is expected to support around 480 children and 1,120 adults.
EpiPens are auto-injectors that deliver a dose of adrenaline, used in emergencies to treat serious allergic reactions that can become life-threatening within minutes.
The devices are relatively expensive, costing up to €75 each, and must be replaced regularly due to their short shelf life.
Under the scheme, patients will be assessed by clinical consultants, who will determine eligibility based on previous anaphylactic episodes.
Those approved will receive the medication via the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme, in line with updated guidelines.
Adults will be given two auto-injectors per year, with one issued initially and another later on, while children will receive both at the same time.
Abela said the initiative marks an important step in improving patient safety, despite challenges in securing supplies internationally.
