October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and regular screening.

In response to a parliamentary question, Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, provided an update on breast cancer cases in Malta for 2025.

He revealed that between 1st January and 15th October 2025, there were 428 new cases of breast cancer. Of these, 104 cases were referred to screening units.

Out of the total, 75 cases were classified as ‘invasive carcinoma’, meaning the cancer had spread into surrounding breast tissue, while 29 were ‘carcinoma in situ’, indicating that the cancer cells remained confined to their original location.

Minister added, “I take this opportunity to encourage every woman who receives an invitation for breast screening not to ignore it and to attend.”
