Malta registered the highest motorisation rate in the EU in 2024, at 4.6 buses and coaches per 1,000 people.
This translates to around 2,620 buses, motor coaches and trolley buses.
Malta was followed by Luxembourg and Estonia at 4.0 and 3.7 respectively. The EU average was 1.6 buses/coaches per 1,000 people.
‘In 2024, there were 737 142 buses and motor coaches (including trolleybuses, mini-buses and mini-coaches) in the EU, 1.6 buses and motor coaches per 1 000 inhabitants.’
The lowest was registered in The Netherlands at 0.5, followed by Germany and Austria at 1.0 and 1.2 respectively.
