The third hub for victims of domestic violence and gender-based violence has officially opened in Mtarfa, further strengthening support services across Malta.

The new hub complements the existing facilities in Santa Luċija and Gozo, extending access to specialised assistance to the northern part of the country.

Following refurbishment works, the building now offers a safe and welcoming environment for those seeking help.

The service operates 24 hours a day throughout the year and is delivered by a multidisciplinary team, including Malta Police Force officers and trained professionals.

The introduction of these hubs has resulted in an increase in reports of domestic violence, reflecting improved accessibility and a more sensitive and professional response to complex situations.

Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri recalled that the Government established a specialised unit in 2020 to address domestic violence cases.

He explained that police officers stationed at district level handle a wide range of responsibilities, making it difficult to provide the level of care required in such delicate cases.

For this reason, the Government opted for a specialised, multi-stakeholder approach. Minister Camilleri said these hubs bring together trained police officers and professionals working closely together, ensuring victims receive the support they need.

He stressed that respect, equality and cultural change remain key to prevention, with society as a whole playing a role.

Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg stated that domestic violence requires continuous and concrete action.

She said the Mtarfa hub demonstrates the Government’s commitment to bringing services closer to communities, offering safe and dignified spaces for victims, and strengthening coordination between the police, social workers and relevant agencies.

She added that this approach helps turn statistics into action and brings the goal of a violence-free future closer to reality.

Efforts to combat domestic violence have also been reinforced through additional measures, including the Victim Support Agency, panic alarm services and new legislation to further protect victims.
