37,771 Students To Start New Scholastic Year In Malta’s State Schools

A total of 37,771 students will be heading back to state schools for the 2026/27 scholastic year, as classrooms across Malta and Gozo get ready to reopen their doors.

The figure covers students from kindergarten all the way up to secondary school and includes 2,754 new students joining the state school system. They will be taught by a total of 8,861 educators.

Meanwhile, 36,457 students across state, Church and independent schools are currently registered to make use of free school transport.

Of these, 15,370 attend state schools, while another 21,087 come from Church and independent schools.

Free school transport is available to eligible students from KG1 to Year 11 who live more than one kilometre away from their school, with the service currently covering 207 schools.

Education Minister Byron Camilleri wished students, parents and educators a good year ahead, saying that every student deserves a safe and modern school together with teachers who believe in them.

And just like that, it’s officially back-to-school season.
