32,000+ Students Enrolled In Post-Sec, Tertiary Education 2023-24

Student enrolments in post-secondary and tertiary institutions during the 2023-2024 academic year increased by 4.6%, reaching a total of 32,675 students.
The data includes those enrolled in formal education programmes of at least one semester in duration, whether studied full-time or part-time, and delivered from Malta.
At post-secondary level, 10,399 students were enrolled, marking a 2.8% increase over the previous year. Males outnumbered females by 2.8 percentage points, with most students aged under 19 (86.0%).
Foreign students made up 17.4% of total post-secondary enrolments, amounting to 1,808 students. The majority attended state-run institutions (84.2%), while over half (55.7%) were following vocationally oriented programmes.

Tertiary education accounted for 22,276 students, an increase of 5.5% compared with 2022-2023.
Female students represented 55.3% of total enrolments. Full-time students totalled 16,293, or 73.1% of the tertiary population, while part-time enrolments declined by 8.7%. Most tertiary students were aged between 20 and 24 (39.1%).
Foreign students at tertiary level reached 8,252, equivalent to 37.0% of all tertiary enrolments, showing a 27.0% rise from the previous year. Of these, 21.9% were non-EU nationals and 15.1% were other EU nationals.
The majority studied at ISCED level 6 (Bachelor’s or equivalent) and ISCED level 7 (Master’s or equivalent). The most popular fields of study were ‘Business, administration and law’ (30.6%) and ‘Health and welfare’ (22.7%), while ‘Generic programmes and qualifications’ accounted for just 0.1%.
