32 Secondary Schools Awarded For Promoting Student Democracy And Participation

32 secondary schools have been recognised for their efforts in promoting democracy and student participation in Aġenzija Żgħażagħ’s Student Councils Democracy Awards.
The initiative aims to encourage students to play a more active role in school life by giving them opportunities to voice their opinions, propose ideas and introduce initiatives to improve their school communities.

Through the programme, participating student councils received an initial grant and training to help turn students’ ideas into practical projects.
The Minister for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme, Omar Farrugia, said “Democracy is not learnt from books alone,” and added that initiatives like these provide young people with meaningful opportunities to express themselves and contribute to decisions affecting them.

He added that student councils help prepare youths to become future leaders by encouraging dialogue, teamwork and democratic participation.
Aġenzija Żgħażagħ chief executive Jason Zammit also highlighted the importance of creating spaces where youths feel empowered to contribute to their communities.
