29% Pension Increase For Disciplined Forces Members Serving Over 29 Years

The Government has announced an increase in pension benefits for members of the Disciplined Forces, raising the existing pension increase from 23% to 29% for those who have served for more than 29 years.

The measure, which forms part of the Government’s electoral manifesto commitments, is being introduced within the first 100 days of the legislature and applies to members of the Armed Forces of Malta, Malta Police Force, Civil Protection Department and Correctional Services.

The new pension adjustment builds on an incentive introduced three years ago, when members of the Disciplined Forces who remained in service beyond 29 years received a 23% pension increase. The latest measure will provide an additional 6 percentage-point increase.

The Government is also extending the period during which officers who complete 29 years of service may remain in employment while receiving a tax-free allowance equivalent to half a year’s salary for every additional year served. The maximum period for this incentive will increase from four to six years.

Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield said the measures recognise the commitment of those who have spent their careers serving the country.

He said the changes were not only financial incentives but also recognition of the contribution made by members of the Disciplined Forces. He added that retaining experienced officers would allow the country to continue benefiting from their knowledge and expertise.

The Minister said investment in the Disciplined Forces also represents investment in security and the quality of life of Maltese and Gozitan families, as these services provide citizens with greater peace of mind.
