More than 1,000 animals have been rescued in Malta so far this year, according to official data tabled in Parliament by Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo in reply to a question from Opposition MP Janice Chetcuti.
Between January and September 2025, 249 dogs and 770 cats were taken in by the authorities.

The dogs included a variety of breeds, with the largest numbers being Chihuahuas (70), Fox Terriers (26), mixed breeds (26), and Pitbulls (21). Smaller numbers of breeds such as Pomeranians, Pharaoh Hounds, German Shepherds, and Yorkshire Terriers were also rescued.
Cats rescued were almost entirely of common breed, with 770 recorded cases during the same period.

Minister also provided adoption figures, highlighting steady rehoming of both cats and dogs. Between January and September, a total of 137 cats were adopted, with the highest number in July when 31 found new homes.
During the same period, 215 dogs were rehomed, including 29 classified as Bully breeds, 163 non-Bully breeds, and 23 mixed-breed dogs. The peak month for dog adoptions was May, with 45 placements.
