Twenty-two migrants were arrested overnight after being found living in Malta irregularly during a series of inspections carried out by the police.

The arrests were made during operations conducted in the areas of Blata l-Bajda, Ħamrun and Marsa.

Authorities also carried out searches at a number of private residences in Marsa, Ħamrun, Fgura and Rabat as part of the enforcement action.

Police officers were assisted by officials from the Detention Services Agency throughout the inspections.

The individuals arrested are currently being held at a detention centre while the relevant authorities complete the necessary procedures to facilitate their relocation to their country of origin or to another country where they are legally permitted to reside.

In a statement, authorities reiterated that Malta remains committed to fulfilling all of its obligations in this area while ensuring full respect for the country's laws and regulations.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to address irregular migration and ensure compliance with national immigration laws.

Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield stated that Malta will continue meeting its “international obligations” by only keeping those who have a “legal right” to reside in Malta.
