20 Year Old Gets One Year Jail Sentence After Fleeing Police With Scooter

A 20-year-old man from Pembroke has been sentenced to one year in prison after being found in possession of drugs while attempting to flee from Police officers on an electric scooter.
Nicholas Galea was charged with possessing cannabis and ketamine in Pembroke during the night between 4 and 5 August, as well as driving the scooter without a licence and insurance cover.
The Court heard that officers on patrol noticed Galea riding the scooter without a helmet or lights. When instructed to stop, he accelerated and attempted to overtake a car before losing control and falling after encountering a speed bump.
Although he suffered a shoulder injury, officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis and later found ketamine in his possession. A search at his residence also uncovered weighing scales.
Galea was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a fracture. During proceedings, he admitted to the charges and told Magistrate Jean Paul Grech that he was neither employed nor studying. The Court was also informed that he was suffering from an acute drug problem.
Galea was handed a one-year prison sentence for the drug offences, fined €3,300 for the driving offences and placed under a three-year treatment order.
