According to information tabled in parliament, a total of twenty people across Malta and Gozo died in July 2026 as a direct consequence of the heat.

It was specified during the reply that the majority of these individuals also had medical conditions that likely contributed to their passing.

This summer saw Malta being hit once again with more intense heat, as the rest of Europe and the world report increasing impacts due to climate change and, by extension, heat related deaths.

This summer, at least 35,000 excess deaths were recorded during Europe’s four record-breaking, back-to-back heatwaves.

As of August 25th 2026, the death toll was highest in Germany as the estimated deaths reached 14,000 between April 6th and August 9th.
