Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela has outlined several Government measures and projects being implemented during the first 100 days of the legislature, including changes to the first-time buyers scheme, social projects and healthcare investment.

Speaking on ONE’s programme Paperscan, Abela said the scheme had evolved over the years and was being expanded to support more people, including separated couples and people with disabilities.

He explained that couples who had purchased a property together before ending their relationship would be able to receive the remaining amount of the €10,000 grant if they later bought another property separately.

Abela said this ensured that people who had already started benefiting from the scheme could still receive the full grant.

He also announced that the first-time buyers grant for people with disabilities would increase from €10,000 to €20,000 and would apply to holders of an EU Disability Card.

He said this extended the support beyond the commitment made in the electoral manifesto, which had focused on people with severe disabilities.

Abela also referred to upcoming investment in social services, including a new Secure Facility for adolescents under 18 in Għargħur, which he said would provide support for young people seeking to reintegrate into society.

A further €12.8 million investment over two years will support the Public Works Department and local councils, while a €130 million healthcare project will extend the Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital and create a new 135-bed Mental Health Hospital.

The Prime Minister said these measures were possible due to Malta’s strong economy, supported by Government decisions such as energy subsidies for families and businesses.
