On 1st October, Malta joins the world in observing the International Day of Older Persons. The Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights paid tribute to the country’s senior citizens for their lifelong contributions to society and the nation.

The Ministry highlighted its ongoing efforts to recognise the role of older persons, including pension increases and the implementation of supportive measures and services to improve their quality of life. These initiatives ensure that elderly citizens can live with dignity and peace of mind.

Thanks to recent pension increases and reforms to other benefits, including in-home care support, older persons in Malta are set to receive around €1.3 billion this year alone—double the amount received in 2013. This is in addition to payments through the Additional Benefit against the Cost of Living, Supplementary Assistance, and Medical Aid.

Today, every pensioner in Malta receives a pension at least €70 per week higher than twelve years ago, alongside other supportive measures such as the removal of anomalies and injustices for pensioners born before 1962 and the abolition of pension-related taxation.

Minister Michael Falzon emphasised that beyond figures and reforms, the greatest achievement is the respect and gratitude enjoyed by older persons in society. He added that while the Government is thankful for the solid foundations built by the elderly, it looks forward to shaping a future of protection and social inclusion together with them, including further social measures in the upcoming Budget.
