Two travellers have recreated a series of photos taken by their grandparents during a trip to Malta nearly 50 years ago.

Returning to the same locations in 2026, the pair set out to capture the changes, and similarities, between the Malta their grandparents experienced in 1979 and the one they discovered today.

“I hadn’t expected to find many changes in a city that has done everything possible to withstand the wear and tear of passing years.

But in Castille Square, we were struck by the contrast,” they explained.

While some parts of Valletta had changed dramatically over the decades, other views remained strikingly familiar.

“A few metres away, we looked out, just as my grandparents had, over a history of wars and cannons.”

The travellers revisited several iconic locations across the capital, including Castille Square, Republic Square and St John’s Co-Cathedral, recreatingfamily memories nearly half a century later.
