19 Cyclists Prepare for 2,000km African Challenge

With less than two weeks to go, 19 cyclists are in the final stages of training for an extraordinary 2,000-kilometre challenge across Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, which they will attempt to complete in just 10 days.

The team originally consisted of 22 participants, but three cyclists were medically discharged during training following injuries. Those remaining are now putting the finishing touches to their preparations ahead of their departure on 4 September.

The challenge aims to raise vital funds for people living with kidney failure in Malta and Gozo. Donations will support the Mater Dei renal ward's "Patient Wishlist", including medical equipment, transplant management software, medical research with the University of Malta, and a pilgrimage to Lourdes for patients and nurses.

The Foundation is also raising funds to continue supporting patients through evening dialysis transport, wellness classes and therapeutic sessions.

This year's team is particularly international, with cyclists from Malta, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Ukraine, Russia and Kenya – the most international squad since 1999.

Before leaving, the cyclists will visit the renal ward to meet patients and nurses and learn more about the people behind their fundraising efforts.
