1779 Helpline Launched To Support Victims Of Revenge Porn

A new 1779 helpline has been launched to support people affected by image-based sexual abuse, including the sharing or threat of sharing intimate images without consent, commonly referred to as "revenge porn".

The service provides a confidential and accessible point of contact where victims can receive emotional support, safety-focused guidance and information about the options available to them. It aims to ensure that people facing this form of abuse are not left to deal with fear, uncertainty or crisis alone.

The helpline was announced by Minister for Social Policy and Family Michael Falzon, who stressed the importance of strengthening support for those affected. He said that while intimate images can be shared within seconds, the impact on victims can last for years.

During the launch, discussions also highlighted barriers that may prevent people from seeking help, including fears of being blamed, judged, not being believed, or concerns that reporting the abuse could lead to further circulation of the images.

FSWS Chief Executive Alfred Grixti said social services must continue adapting to emerging forms of abuse and the challenges faced by individuals and families.

People contacting 1779 will receive confidential and non-judgemental support, emotional assistance, safety guidance, information on available options, help identifying practical steps, and referrals to other relevant services.
