Tonight’s Budget 2027 marks another milestone for the Labour Party, as the Government prepares to present its 15th consecutive Budget since returning to power in 2013.

Over the past 13 years, Labour has governed under two Prime Ministers, Joseph Muscat and Robert Abela, with two Finance Ministers responsible for presenting the country’s financial plans.

Labour’s first Budget came in April 2013, shortly after Joseph Muscat’s election victory. It was presented by Edward Scicluna, who would go on to deliver nine consecutive Budgets, covering 2013 to 2021.

Under Muscat’s leadership, eight Budgets were presented, from 2013 to 2020. Robert Abela, who became Prime Minister in January 2020, will oversee his seventh Budget this evening, covering 2021 to 2027.

The Finance Ministry also saw a change in November 2020, when Clyde Caruana replaced Edward Scicluna. Tonight will mark Caruana’s sixth consecutive Budget presentation, having delivered his first for 2022.

Budget 2027 will also be the first Budget of Labour’s fourth consecutive term in government, following its electoral victories in 2013, 2017, 2022 and 2026.

With the theme Malta Miegħek, this year’s Budget comes amid international economic uncertainty, rising pressures on public finances and continued commitments to supporting families and businesses.

As Labour enters another year in government, attention now turns to what its latest financial plans will mean for Malta and Gozo.
