Responding to a parliamentary question, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg revealed that there are currently 14 Maltese citizens serving prison sentences in foreign countries.

The majority of these are doing so in Australia, with a total of 5, followed by Libya with a total of 2. The rest of the countries on the list, including France, the United States, Türkiye and Morocco, have one Maltese citizen serving a sentence.

The Foreign Affairs and Tourism Minister explained that this list only consists of individuals with Maltese citizenship who requested aid from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism.

The Minister explained that if an inmate does not request aid from their representative country, no contact can be made. Therefore, the list could potentially not reflect the actual amount of persons with Maltese nationality who are currently serving prison sentences abroad.
