She explained that this year, the Animal Welfare Department received 13 applications for the scheme, all of which were deemed eligible for support. “Once again, animal sanctuaries will benefit from this much-needed scheme. Thirteen sanctuaries will receive financial assistance amounting to approximately €75,000, recognising the valuable work of volunteers and our commitment to continue supporting them. This is proof of a Government that truly values the voluntary sector within animal welfare.”

The Parliamentary Secretary further explained that, alongside this investment, another electoral promise is being fulfilled through a scheme providing assistance for sanctuary maintenance. “As a Government, we deeply appreciate the tremendous work carried out by volunteers, motivated by their genuine love for animals. These dedicated schemes will continue to be rolled out to provide support and assistance to this sector,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said.

The Director for Animal Welfare, Joseph John Vella, stated that the scheme received 13 applications from animal sanctuaries, and licensed eligible sanctuaries will benefit from rates of €45 for dogs and cats, while horses will receive €180 each. Following the necessary verifications, the overall investment in this scheme is expected to exceed €75,000.

The 13 animal sanctuaries benefiting from the ‘Free Vet Services to NGOs’ scheme are Animal Care Malta, Association for Abandoned Animals (AAA), Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines (CSAF), Cats and Dogs Shelter, Dreams of Horses, Gozo SPCA, Island Sanctuary Association, Love for Strays, MSPCA, National Cat Society (Tomasina Cat Sanctuary), Noah’s Ark, RMJ Horse Rescue, and Stray Animals Support Group (SASG).
