A total of 11 people were sent to prison in 2025 for failing to honour their legal child maintenance obligations, according to information tabled in Parliament.

The figures were provided by Home Affairs, Security and Employment Minister Byron Camilleri in reply to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Ivan Bartolo.

Bartolo asked how many individuals had been imprisoned during 2025, up to the date of the parliamentary reply, for breaching their obligation to pay maintenance.

In his reply, Minister Camilleri confirmed that 11 individuals had entered prison during 2025 in relation to maintenance cases.

The data highlights the legal consequences faced by parents who fail to comply with court-ordered financial responsibilities towards their children, obligations which are intended to safeguard the wellbeing and stability of minors.

Child maintenance forms a crucial part of family law in Malta, ensuring that both parents contribute financially to their children’s upbringing, even after separation.

The parliamentary reply did not provide further details on the duration of imprisonment or the individual circumstances of each case.
