1 In 5 People In Malta Are At Risk Of Poverty Or Social Exclusion

According to information tabled in parliament, 1 in every 5 persons in Malta are currently at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

This means a drop from 24.6% in 2013 to 19.7% today or, put differently, a drop from 1 in 4 to 1 in every 5.

Over the same period, the number of persons experiencing severe material and social deprivation dropped from 10.2% (1 in every 10 people) to 4% (1 in every 25 people).

Meanwhile, those experiencing material and social deprivation decreased from 19.9% (1 in every 5 people) to 9% (1 in every 11 people).

Meanwhile, the number of individuals on social assistance fell from 12,708 in 2013 to 5,676 by the end of December 2025. Similarly, those receiving unemployment social assistance decreased from 6,119 in 2013 to 374.

The information was tabled in parliament by Minister Michael Falzon in response to PN MP Graziella Attard Previ.
