This year’s edition of SkolaSajf has officially begun, welcoming around 12,000 students to centres across Malta and Gozo. With the theme “Magical Islands”, the programme invites children on a journey to explore the charm and beauty of the Maltese Islands through a magical lens over the next eight weeks.

During a visit to Maria Regina College Secondary School in Naxxar, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima praised both the quality and impact of the initiative. He emphasised that SkolaSajf is not only a high-quality educational service, but also part of the government’s wider vision to ensure the education system reflects the realities and needs of today’s society.

“SkolaSajf forms part of our broader educational strategy nurturing children from a young age through alternative learning that prepares them for life.” said Minister Grima.

SkolaSajf is running in 54 centres across the islands from Monday to Friday, with transport provided for students whose usual schools are undergoing structural works. The service will run from 9th July to 5th September, with a short break between 11th and 15th August.

Standard hours are from 8:30am to 12:30pm, with extended hours for working parents offered at selected centres from 7:00am to 8:30am and 12:30pm to 5:30pm.

The Minister described the programme as a continued success, with application numbers increasing year on year from 7,849 in 2020 to around 12,000 this year.

Through SkolaSajf, thousands of children benefit from informal educational activities tied to the year’s theme, including games, field trips, and sports. The programme also sees growing collaboration from around 90 public and private entities, including NGOs and private companies.

To deliver the service, nearly 2,200 staff have been engaged across various roles, including coordinators, playworkers, child support staff, and specialists in sports and performing arts.
