Arnold Sciberras Publishes ‘The Secret Cockroach Guide My Technicians Use’

Arnold Sciberras, a leading Maltese naturalist and pest control expert, has released a landmark new book: The Secret Cockroach Guide My Technicians Use. Founder of Insectopia, Malta’s renowned insect farm, and The Exterminator pest management service, Sciberras draws on decades of experience studying insects in the Maltese Islands, as well as his work on educational television programmes and numerous publications on biodiversity and pest species.

What began as a simple leaflet for his technicians has evolved into the first comprehensive cockroach guide for the Maltese Islands, offering detailed insight into both common pests and rare local species.

The hardbound, 122-page guide blends practical identification tools with scholarly investigation into cockroach morphology, ecology, and cultural history. It covers household species such as the American, German, and Oriental cockroaches, as well as rarer endemic species like the Maltese and Jeffrey’s Fungus Rock cockroaches.

“Cockroaches are often dismissed as pests, but they are also remarkable survivors with fascinating biology,” Sciberras explains. “This guide represents years of hands-on work and research, and I hope it inspires greater understanding of these creatures whether in the field, the lab, or at home.”
