Annual Tourism In Malta Added Almost 47,000 Persons In Malta

According to the NSO, tourism added an estimated 46,918 people to Malta’s mid-year resident population in 2024, raising the island’s effective population to 615,763.
The usual resident population at mid-year was 568,845. When accounting for tourists, the effective population averaged 615,763 throughout the year.

However, the seasonal nature of tourism caused significant monthly fluctuations.
During December, the month with the fewest visitors, the effective population was 581,720, including 12,875 tourists. In contrast, August, the peak tourism month, saw an influx of 80,701 tourists, bringing the effective population to 649,546. The difference between the highest and lowest tourism months amounted to 67,826 people, or 11.7 per cent.
In 2024, San Ġiljan saw the highest tourism intensity with nearly 80 tourists per 100 residents, followed by Valletta with 69. Notably, in 2024, Tas-Sliema’s population density rose from 17,148 to 23,929 per km² when tourists were included.

The top six tourism localities in Malta for 2024 are San Ġiljan, San Pawl il-Baħar, Tas-Sliema, Il-Mellieħa, Il-Gżira, and Valletta.
