For Holy Thursday, the Chrism Mass took place in the Archdiocese of Malta. All the priests of the diocese and the deacons took part in the blessing of the oil during the Mass.

The Chrism Mass is the only Mass celebrated on Holy Thursday in the Archdiocese of Malta, which formed part of renewing the promises of their priestly ordination, reaffirming their commitment to unity with each other and with their bishop.

During the mass, Archbishop Charles Scicluna prayed for all the priests and their callings, for acceptance with humility and for faith.

He also urged that during these three holy days, priests should ask themselves:

“Through our words, our actions, or the way we treat one another, are we truly messengers of liberation, bearers of the Good News, and light for the blind? Are our deeds ones that bring freedom and grace?”

The first oil blessed is the Oil of the Sick, followed by the Oil of Catechumens used during the rites preceding Baptism. Lastly, the Sacred Chrism is consecrated—this oil is used to anoint persons, objects, or places set apart for God.

Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by his wife Lydia Abela and Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri, visited the Prison Bakery to witness the preparations firsthand. They were welcomed by Christopher Siegersma, CEO of the Correctional Services Agency, who led a tour of the bakery and its operations.

The prison bakery was inaugurated over 45 years ago and continues to train inmates in baking and trade skills while supplying bread for both inmates and staff.

Devotion On Display! The Good Fridays of Qormi

Apr 17 2025 Share

In Malta, Holy Week is marked by deeply rooted traditions, including the decoration of homes with small Good Friday statues. This custom, prevalent in villages like Qormi, sees residents placing religious figurines in their windows, reflecting a heartfelt expression of devotion during this solemn period.

These home displays complement the larger public observances of Holy Week across the islands. Good Friday processions, featuring life-sized statues depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, are a central feature in towns such as Qormi, Żebbuġ, and Rabat. Participants often dress in traditional attire, and some engage in acts of penance, such as walking barefoot or carrying chains.

The Laferla Cross pilgrimage near Siġġiewi is another notable tradition. Since 1994, the path to this early 20th-century landmark has been illuminated with torches and candles during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, creating a solemn atmosphere for pilgrims who often ascend the hill barefoot in silent reflection.

These enduring practices, both private and communal, highlight Malta’s rich cultural heritage and the deep reverence with which its people observe Holy Week.
