AI and Robotics Research Project Aimed at Improving Elderly Care and Quality of Life

A new research project, announced by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Research, and Innovation, aims to enhance elderly care through the use of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The project, titled HEARTS (Human-centred Elderly Assistance with Robotic Technology and Support), seeks to assist the elderly in managing their daily needs with the help of AI-powered robots.
HEARTS, led by Professor Conrad Attard, is one of several research projects funded by the Parliamentary Secretariat. It aims to provide essential support to elderly individuals, improving their quality of life and making daily tasks easier through the use of cutting-edge technology.
Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti praised the project, acknowledging its importance in advancing the care of the elderly. “This project addresses another crucial sector where technological advancements can complement the outstanding work already provided by health professionals,” he said.
Professor Conrad Attard explained that the HEARTS project would make a significant impact in elderly care homes. The project aims to provide robots with the ability to assist with tasks such as cleaning, medication reminders, and offering social interaction for elderly individuals who may not have regular visitors.
Jorgen Souness, the Chief Executive Officer of San Vinċenz de Paule, also expressed his support for the initiative. He highlighted the potential benefits of the project for active ageing, welcoming the opportunity to collaborate. “San Vinċenz de Paule is always ready to support projects like this, which aim to improve the lives of elderly residents and the professionals who care for them,” he said.
The HEARTS project is set to revolutionise elderly care, combining innovation with compassion to improve the well-being of older individuals.
