ADPD Condemns Harsh Abortion Laws, Calls for Decriminalisation

Maltese political party ADPD has strongly condemned Malta’s continued criminalisation of abortion, describing it as a shameful reality in light of the recent court case where a woman was handed a 22-month suspended prison sentence for having an abortion.
In a public statement, the party stressed that Malta continues to have the harshest abortion laws in all of Europe, arguing that the country must finally decriminalise abortion and treat it as a healthcare issue, not a criminal offence.
Party leader Sandra Gauci said this case exposed a grim truth, abortions are happening, but women facing difficulties still cannot trust medical professionals due to fear of legal repercussions.
She described the prosecution as a “witch hunt” against women, and insisted that this must end. “The life of a woman is important and has value,” Gauci said.
ADPD also recalled that the Labour Party had previously pledged that no woman would face imprisonment for abortion. They challenged the current government to uphold that commitment by issuing a presidential pardon to the woman in question.
The party reaffirmed its stance that decriminalisation is essential to ensure dignity, safety, and justice for women in Malta.
