Activists March Through Valletta In Pro-Choice Rally

Activists and members of the public marched through Valletta for the annual Abortion Rights Rally, organised by the Voice for Choice coalition to mark International Safe Abortion Day on September 28.

This year’s rally, coinciding with the coalition’s 5th anniversary, focused on demanding concrete action from the government to decriminalise abortion in Malta.

The coalition emphasised that while discussions are important, immediate steps are needed to address the worsening situation. Recent incidents include women being prosecuted or investigated for seeking abortions, with professionals and services reporting them to authorities instead of offering support.

Voice for Choice criticised the government for backtracking on Bill 28, which initially aimed to make abortion laws less restrictive but resulted in a complex and inadequate measure. The coalition warned that this legislation could mislead the public into believing abortion is no longer a pressing issue, which is far from the case. Hundreds of Maltese residents still resort to self-managing abortions with illegal abortion pills each year.

During the rally, fliers provided information on safe abortion support services, while speakers, including international activists, addressed the crowd.

Doctors for Choice also presented testimonies from individuals willing to publicly share their abortion experiences. The message was clear: abortion must be decriminalised, accessible, and stigma-free in Malta.

Marvel & DC Lose Trademark Of Term ‘Superhero’

Marvel & DC Lose Trademark Of Term 'Superhero'

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the long-held joint trademark on the term “Super Hero” by Marvel Comics and DC Comics, following a legal challenge by Scott Richold of Superbabies Ltd.

This decision came after Marvel and DC failed to respond to court requests in time. The trademark, first registered in 1977 and approved in 1979, had previously allowed Marvel and DC to protect the term “superhero” from use by other companies.

However, Richold’s challenge argued that “superhero” is a generic term and should not be controlled by a few companies. The court’s ruling in favor of Superbabies Ltd means that “Super Hero” and related terms are now in the public domain.

This change will not affect Marvel or DC’s ability to print or use the term, but it opens the door for other companies to freely use “Super Hero” without legal repercussions.

Superbabies’ lead counsel, Adam Adler, hailed the ruling as a victory for creativity and innovation, ensuring that the term is available to all storytellers. Richold expressed hope that the decision will inspire smaller companies to share their superhero stories without fear of trademark restrictions.
