Abuse Must Be Confronted Wherever It Occurs, Says Alex Borg

PN MP Alex Borg took to social media to state that abuse must be confronted wherever it occurs, and that the role of public officials is to serve the people, not themselves.
His comments came in the wake of the resignation of Francine Farrugia, who stepped down from all roles within the Nationalist Party and from the Siġġiewi Local Council after being charged with fraud and other financial crimes.
Borg said that when abuse comes from someone holding a position of trust, it undermines the credibility of public life and betrays those who believe in honest and clean politics.
He emphasised that, like his colleagues in the Nationalist Party, he remains committed to fighting abuse and promoting integrity across all levels of public service.
Farrugia, aged 31, is accused of defrauding MCAST of more than €2.3 million while working in its salaries department between 2023 and 2025.
She allegedly used her access to authorise duplicate payments to her own bank and Revolut accounts.
Authorities also stopped a further €122,000 transfer in July. A search of her home uncovered high-value items, receipts for luxury purchases, and evidence of property and vehicle acquisitions.
The Nationalist Party said it was informed by Farrugia’s legal counsel of her immediate resignation. It reaffirmed its commitment to high standards and said the legal process must now take its course.
