Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in a Peaky Blinders movie, following his Oscar win for Oppenheimer.
Netflix has officially greenlit the film, with Murphy starring and producing. Directed by Tom Harper and written by series creator Steven Knight, production will begin later this year in association with BBC Films.
The Bafta-winning series, which gained a global following on Netflix, has long been speculated to continue as a film. Knight previously hinted at a movie, and this confirmation marks the first official announcement. Murphy has expressed his eagerness to return, saying if there’s more story to tell, he’ll be involved.
While plot details remain undisclosed, Knight suggested the film would follow the series finale set during the Second World War.
The show’s six seasons covered the period from the end of World War I to the end of Prohibition in the US. Knight promised an explosive chapter for the film, with Murphy calling it gratifying to work with Knight and Harper again.
Peaky Blinders, which launched in 2013 and gained international fame on Netflix in 2014, features a strong cast including Tom Hardy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and the late Helen McCrory. Harper highlighted the series’ explosive nature and the excitement of reuniting with the team for the movie.
