9 Arrested In Connection To Drug Trafficking In Malta

Nine persons, allegedly involved in drug trafficking, were arrested in two operations carried out by the police force on Tuesday.

After intensive investigations, police surrounded a garage in St Paul’s Bay. From searches conducted in the garage, 15 kilos of a substance suspected to be cocaine with a suspected street value of €2 million, were found. 

In connection to the case, a search was carried out in a Gżira residence. From the two locations, two Maltese persons and four Italians were arrested. 

In another operation, in Ħamrun and Ħal Qormi, three Maltese persons were arrested. In a conducted search, an amount of cocaine and heroin was also found. 

The persons arrested are currently being held in the Police General headquarters for further investigations. 

An inquiry has been opened.

The final stages of construction for the new Operations Centre for the Armed Forces of Malta are underway, encompassing emergency operations like search and rescue, military actions, and countering criminal activities. 

Prime Minister Robert Abela, during a visit to this state-of-the-art facility, highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing public safety. 

The project, funded with €5 million, co-financed by EU funds, ensures the disciplined forces can continue their duties effectively.

The investment guarantees top-notch security services, tailored to meet the needs of a modern nation. The centre is designed to function seamlessly under various circumstances, including earthquake resilience. 

It encompasses four key functions: Joint Military Operations Centre, Rescue Coordination Centre, National Coordination Centre, and vessel traffic coordination around Malta’s coast.

Abela emphasized that the government’s investment extends to the workforce, allowing them to form a union, and collective agreements for the disciplined forces have already been signed. The aim of these infrastructure and human resource investments is to foster safer communities and stand in solidarity with the disciplined forces.

Abela commended the AFM for their daily efforts, noting their expanded presence and effectiveness within communities, enabled by modern resources for swift emergency response. He also acknowledged their international contributions in recent weeks, extending assistance beyond Malta’s borders.

Yesterday evening saw the Pride Awards in Pjazza Tritoni’s Pride Village, with awards being handed out for various individuals for their contributions to the LGBTIQ+ community and many other areas of life.

With Glen Vella winning the final People’s Choice Award, other categories included the Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to Helena Dalli) and Unconditional Love of a Parent Award (awarded to Sylvana Attard).

Kurt and Glenn Zammit Freeman were awarded the Influence and Impact Award, Romeo Roxman Gatt the Transcendence in Artistry Award, Joshua John Cavollo the Courage in Sports Award, Viktoria Radvanyi the Excellence in LGBTIQ+ Representation Worldwide and last but not least , Michelle Cilia the Equality in Healthcare Award.
