According to reports, 73-year-old Vella was visiting the island on holiday. He reportedly encountered difficulty while swimming at around 6.30pm and was pulled from the water by other swimmers.

Emergency first aid was administered at the scene, including the use of a defibrillator, before he was taken to Gozo General Hospital by ambulance.

Sadly, he passed away shortly after, police confirmed in a statement issued earlier today.
