Dr. Lydia Abela has launched the fifth edition of A Gift with Love, an initiative aimed at ensuring vulnerable children receive gifts this Christmas, inspired by the generosity of the Maltese and Gozitan communities.

During the event, accompanied by a children’s choir, Dr. Abela highlighted the importance of spreading love and joy, particularly to those in need.

She paid tribute to Jake Vella, a young boy who participated in last year’s initiative before his passing, noting that his altruism continues to inspire the campaign.

Reflecting on its growth, she said, “What started as a small dream in 2020 has blossomed into something larger and more beautiful, involving communities across the country.”

This year, local councils are fully involved.

Christmas trees will be placed in towns and villages from December 12-19 for residents to leave gifts, which will then be collected and displayed under a Christmas tree in Castille Square on December 20. For the first time, children in schools across Malta and Gozo are encouraged to donate gifts as well.

A Christmas Village in Castille Square, running from December 16-20, will host various activities, with families invited to celebrate and contribute.

Additionally, A Gift with Love with a Difference at Mater Dei Hospital will focus on collecting food and supplies for abandoned animals in Jake Vella’s memory.

The initiative, organised with multiple partners and Magic 91.7, ensures donated gifts are distributed with care and love.

Actor Ralph Fiennes, known for portraying Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter films, has endorsed Cillian Murphy for a role in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Fiennes called Murphy “a fantastic actor” and said he fully supports the idea.

This comes following the passing of Dame Maggie Smith, who played Professor McGonagall in the films. Fiennes, who first appeared as Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and reprised the role in four other films, has previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise.

Cillian Murphy, meanwhile, is currently filming the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie, reprising his role as Tommy Shelby.

Reports suggest Mark Rylance is a frontrunner for the role of Dumbledore in the new series, which will span seven seasons and be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books.

Francesca Gardiner has been announced as the series’ writer and show runner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes.

Casting is underway, with open auditions held in the UK and Ireland. Originally expected to air in 2026, HBO now anticipates a release in late 2026 or 2027. The series promises to reintroduce much-loved characters with a fresh cast for a new generation of fans.
